I find that the little 1, 2, or 3mm gaps are hard and the short organic supports get stuck to the model. What I do it print the model up in the air and have longer supports. Therefore they come off easier. Here is prusa's official how to article on that.

They define surfaces where support should and should not be applied. They do NOT act like keep out areas. They also do NOT apply to the print bed, only to the model.
